Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that has roots in Korean culture dating back over 5,000 years. The literal translation of Taekwondo means 'the art of the foot and fist'.
Like other martial arts and physical activities, Taekwondo has evolved through the years. Since the formalisation of Taekwondo through the Korean Taekwondo Assocation in 1961, and subsequent formation of the World Taekwondo Federation in 1973, Taekwondo has seen rapid growth worldwide, and achieved recognition as an Olympic sport.
